1944 - joined the African National Congress
1948 - was engaged resistance against National apartheid policies
1956-1961 - on trail for treason
1961 - was acquitted
1962 - arrested and sentenced five years hard labour
1963 - brought on trail for plotting overthrow government by violence
1964 - sentenced life imprisonment
1964-1982 - at Robben Island Prison
1983-1990 - at Pollsmoor Prison
1990 - released in Feb 11
1991 - became president
